Basic Concepts- The numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... are whole numbers.
E.g: 11, 100 and 26 318 are whole numbers.
- 0.25, 1/2, 3/4, -3.12, -8 and -76.25 are NOT whole numbers.
- The numbers 1, 2 ,3 , 4, ... are natural numbers. In other words, natural numbers are alll whole numbers except zero.
- A whole number that is divisble by 2 is called an even number.
0, 2, 4, 6, 8, ... are even numbers.
- A whole number that is not divisible by 2 is called an odd number.
- NOTE: Zero is an even number since zero can be written in the form 2 x n, where n is an interger, .i.e. 0 = 2 x 0
- Numerals are symbols for numbers.
E.g. 128 represents one hundred and twenty-eight in numerals.
- Digits are the number symbols(symbols) 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 in our number system. Number written as a combination of these ten digits.
- Place value tells us the value of each digit in a number. In our number system, each place has tens times the value of the place to its right.
E.g. 8673 = (8 x 1000) + (6 x 100) + (7 x 10) + (3 x 1) = 8000 + 600 + 70 + 3
8 is in the thousands place, 6 is in the hundreds place, 7 is in the tens place and 3 is in the ones place.
